Speed freaks unite. It鈥檚 the opening weekend for Western Speedway and after a week of wonderful weather, facility general manager George Wade is hoping the rain stays away for the green flag.

鈥淚t is what it is. Weather is a huge factor with what we do, but we鈥檙e really looking forward to it,鈥 Wade said of the start of the 59th season at the paved oval in Langford.

With the battle on for everyone鈥檚 entertainment dollar, Western Speedway is no different in attempting to keep their regulars regaled and to draw even more clientele.

鈥淚t鈥檚 been staying steady,鈥 he said of attendance numbers. 鈥淭his year, like any venue, entertainment dollars are at such a high commodity, you have to go out and market your sport, much like the [Victoria] Royals did with certain nights at lower prices.

鈥淔or us, on a Saturday night, a family of six can get in for $35, which includes two adults and four children between seven and 13. That鈥檚 a great program. We had it last year and we are really emphasizing it this year,鈥 added Wade. 鈥淚t鈥檚 great family fun.鈥

Opening weekend includes the Lordco Auto Parts Demo series featuring Demo cars, Demo trucks, Bombers, Mini Figure-8s and a drifting exhibition.

As for the year ahead, Wade said: 鈥淭he monster trucks is a huge event for us, as is the Daffodil Cup, the sa国际传媒 200 is this year and so is the Strawberry Cup.鈥

The latter is slated for June 14-15, while the Daffodil Cup goes Aug. 16-17. The sa国际传媒 200 is slated for Aug. 30-31 and the monster trucks will rip up the track on May 25.

Gates this weekend open at 4:30 p.m. Qualifying is at 5:30 p.m., with racing at 6:30 p.m.

There are four Friday-Saturday events scheduled for 2013 and starting on June 19, Western Speedway will feature Hornets on every Wednesday through to Aug. 28.

New this year are fundraisers for groups, be it school or amateur sports teams.

鈥淲e鈥檙e offering the family pack $35 ticket to any group for $20, they get $10 and we get $10.

It鈥檚 a great fundraiser for $20 and it鈥檚 for the whole family. There are 15 different events you can attend,鈥 said Wade.
