Perfect games in baseball are rare at any level, so it鈥檚 noteworthy whenever one occurs.

Athletics pitcher Charlie Strandlund tossed one Wednesday night at Lambrick Park in the opening game of the best-of-three Mavericks League playoff final, retiring all 27 Dodgers batters in order in a 6-0 victory.

鈥淚t鈥檚 absolutely incredible. It鈥檚 a feeling of pure joy . . . and relief when the final out came,鈥 said Strandlund, who struck out nine.

鈥淭he guys behind me were on fire and got to every ground ball and fly ball.鈥

It was not known how many, if any, perfect games have been thrown in the history of the Mavericks League, which features top local senior players, many of whom in their careers have played minor pro or in U.S. collegiate ball.

In the majors, only 14 perfect games have been thrown in the history of the AL and nine in the NL since 1880.

The versatile Strandlund, who has played for sa国际传媒 at the World University Games and World Baseball Challenge, is no stranger to the odd and unusual on the diamond. In a pro game with the Victoria Seals of the defunct Golden League, Strandlund once played all nine positions in nine innings.

Game 2 of the Mavericks League final between the defending-champion A鈥檚 and Dodgers is tonight at 6 p.m. at Lambrick Park. Game 3, if needed, would be Friday at 6 p.m.
