Fresh off an Island championship, the Claremont Spartans golf team will see where it rates provincially when the sa国际传媒 triple-A championship tees off today and Wednesday at the Port Alberni Golf Club.
The Spartans recently finished first at Islands at Morningstar Golf Course in Parksville, ahead of Belmont, Dover Bay and Spectrum, the last of which has qualified for provincials for the first time ever.
Each team will consist of five players with four scores counting toward the team score. A practice round was held Monday and the teams will play 36 holes for individual and team titles.
Prince of Wales won the team event last season at Squamish Golf and Country Club as Dover Bay finished fourth, Mark Isfeld seventh, Claremont tied for 10th and Belmont tied for 12th.
Claremont is coming off its first Island title since 2007 and also won the Lower Island event and Police tournament this season.
鈥淥ur team is playing solid. If we鈥檙e all playing well we have a chance to take home the win,鈥 said Cam Bourque, who led Claremont to the Police tournament win with the individual title with rounds of 70 and 74. Teammate Josh Miller was third with a 151 total.
Team wise, Claremont finished well ahead of Lord Elgin and St. Georges at that event.
At Islands, Simon Hassel led the Spartans, tied for second with Abigail Rigsby of Vanier with 72s, four strokes behind individual winner Shirin Anjarwalla of Dover Bay with a 68 as girls took two of the top three spots. Bourque was fourth with a 73.
鈥淚鈥檝e been hitting the ball well and I鈥檝e been rolling it well, too,鈥 said Bourque, who also finished 4-under at Lower Islands. 鈥淚 just have to stick to my game plan and not necessarily go after flags that I shouldn鈥檛 be going after. I have to play it safe. If there is a flag that I don鈥檛 feel comfortable with, I should just play for the middle of the green, the safe spot.鈥
Along with Hassell and Miller, Bourque is joined by Alex Cordero and Marty Callan on the Spartans鈥 team.
鈥淐laremont is a strong team. Anyone on that team can shoot under 80,鈥 said Spectrum鈥檚 Keaton Gudz, who should also contend for low individual honours. 鈥淭eam wise, we鈥檒l have fun and play as well as we can. For myself, I just want to play as well as I can and not worry about anything else, just have fun.鈥
Gudz is joined on the Spectrum team by Justin Bao, Tyler Lepine, Connor Mckillop, Nash Kellett and Kevin Bao.
Belmont features Kyle Leiman, Tyson Girardet, Dylan Green, Bryce Tickner Krakowec and Nolan Thoroughgood.
Dover Bay is led by Anjarwala, a very talented junior player, John MacDonald, Johnny Dial, Dylan Coghlan and Sasha Farenholtz.
