Third-string QB ends Jets' touchdown drought

Greg McElroy accomplished more in one half than Mark Sanchez and Tim Tebow did in three games.

Still, there's no quarterback controversy with the New York Jets.

McElroy became the first quarterback to lead the Jets into the end zone this preseason in a 28-10 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday night.

The Jets (0-4) were the first team in 35 years to go three pre-season games without a touchdown, matching the 1977 Atlanta Falcons for offensive futility.

McElroy ended that drought. His reward will be a seat on the bench.

"I'm glad we got it," Jets coach Rex Ryan said. "I'm not going to sit here and say I wish we [hadn't scored]. I would've liked to have saved it and tack it on next week."

The Jets open against Buffalo on Sept. 9. The Eagles will play at Cleveland.

Sanchez, Tebow and most of the Jets starters didn't play in this battle between backups and guys fighting for roster spots.

Michael Vick and all of Philadelphia's starters watched from the sideline.

Trent Edwards threw for 197 yards and two TDs to help the Eagles (4-0) finish unbeaten in the pre-season for the first time since 1995.

None of that will matter when the games count. Hours before kickoff, Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie stopped just short of issuing a win-or-else ultimatum to coach Andy Reid.

Lurie said the team must make a "substantial improvement" for Reid to return for his 15th season next year. He added another 8-8 record would be "unacceptable."

TITANS 10, SAINTS 6

NASHVILLE - The New Orleans Saints took no chances in their final pre-season game, resting all the starters in a 10-6 loss to the Tennessee Titans on Thursday night as they prepared to return home to storm-ravaged Louisiana and put a scandal-ridden off-season behind them.

Interim coach Joe Vitt scratched 26 players, including starting quarterback Drew Brees and their top three running backs and wide receivers, ensuring the Saints (2-3) will be on solid footing as he begins a suspension for New Orleans' payforinjury scheme. Offensive line coach Aaron Kromer will lead the team into its Sept. 9 regularseason opener against the Washington Redskins.

New Orleans' backups showed plenty of spark with a few roster spots on the line and largely outplayed the starters of the Titans (3-1) early in what was a meaningless game for just about everyone but new Tennessee starting quarterback Jake Locker. He completes 9 of 16 passes for 81 yards in four series.
