Top cyclists aim to master Victoria streets; expect road closures

Spokes will be spinning as the top masters cyclists in the country converge on the roads of Greater Victoria tonight through Sunday for the Canadian Masters Road Cycling Championships and Robert Cameron Law Cycling Series.

Spokes will be spinning as the top masters cyclists in the country converge on the roads of Greater Victoria tonight through Sunday for the Canadian Masters Road Cycling Championships and Robert Cameron Law Cycling Series.

The series begins tonight at 6 with the Veloguide time trial at Clover Point and Dallas Road. The time triallists will start individually at one-minute intervals, racing laps on a Dallas Road course.

The racers will take to the hills of Metchosin on Saturday morning for the tough 10-kilometre circuit of the Motus Cycling Classic road race. Female and male riders topping their field in various age groups will be crowned Canadian champions.

The racing reaches a crescendo Sunday with the Russ Hay鈥檚 Grand Prix criterium around the sa国际传媒 legislature as racers go around a fast four-corner circuit. The racers will complete multiple laps while negotiating turns at over 60-kilometres per hour.

Masters criterium races run all morning starting at 8 a.m. with the Canadian masters champions being crowned throughout the morning in various age categories. The female elite race starts at 4 p.m. and the full day of racing ends with the elite men鈥檚 race at 5 p.m.

Kids ages three to 10 will be involved in the Tim Hortons Timbit Challenge, where they will be joined by Canadian Olympians to ride along the race circuit. This popular race reached its 200-field maximum so registration is closed.

Road closures

Friday

Clover Point and Dallas Road between Douglas and St. Charles streets will be closed to all vehicle traffic between 3 and 9 p.m. for the Veloguide time trial event. No parking will be allowed on the closed areas during the event, and cars parked on the route after 3 p.m. will be towed.

Saturday

Expect delays in Metchosin along Rocky Point, Liberty, Labonne and Kangaroo roads as riders complete multiple laps of the 10-kilometre Motus Cycling Classic road race route. Drivers will be allowed on the roads when no racers are present. The race runs from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Sunday

Sunday's all-day Grand Prix will completely close streets surrounding the legislature. Full closures, including parking, will be enforced on Belleville, Government, Superior and Menzies streets between 3 a.m. and 8 p.m. Southbound traffic on Government Street will be redirected east on Belleville Street.
