More than 500 veteran cyclists from across the country decided national championships over a weekend of racing in Greater Victoria during the Robert W. Cameron Global Relay Canadian masters championships.
Shauna Telford of Edmonton was crowned the national women鈥檚 30-39 age-group criterium champion on a course that encircled the legislature precinct on Sunday afternoon.
鈥淚t was a very tactical race and I worked with Gail [Wozny] throughout the race,鈥 said Telford.
Wozny, also from Edmonton, won the over-50 women鈥檚 title.
Daniel Therer of Saint-Adele, Que., won the masters men鈥檚 50-59 criterium race after taking a bit of a rest during Saturday鈥檚 road race.
鈥淚鈥檓 not much of a hill climber, so stopped at 50K, so I could focus on the crit,鈥 he said.
Therer, who holds 1983 team pursuit and 2010 criterium national titles, said the race Sunday was very controlled and knew the sprint would come at the last corner where he leaned on some other Quebec riders to help.
Langlois Brown Racing team鈥檚 Vincent Marcotte took a surprise win in the finishing sprint along Belleville Street of the men鈥檚 40-49 criterium race. Vancouver Pender Racing riders controlled most of the race but Marcotte pulled it out on the last corner to get the win.
Meanwhile, Dominic Chalifoux of Montreal was crowned men鈥檚 40-49 masters road racing champion on Saturday in the 110-kilometre race through Metchosin.
鈥淚 came here four weeks ago so rode a few laps and knew it was a really tough course,鈥 he said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a beautiful course.鈥
Squamish鈥檚 Jamie Sparling won the men鈥檚 30-39 masters road race title, but used some family team work from his younger brother, Jeff, who stayed with him most of the race.
Anne-Julie Dudemaine of Banff,won the women鈥檚 masters 30-39 road race in 2:28:46. The was 70 kilometres in distance through Metchosin.
鈥淚 wanted to keep at the front and respond to any attacks,鈥 she said.
Carolyn Russell, racing for Vancouver鈥檚 Pender Racing, won the 40-49 women鈥檚 road race.
