Some good news for Alex Gogolev on Sunday afternoon helped brighten up a rather dreary ending to the season for the 20-year-old Victoria Royals forward.
Gogolev, the club’s leading scorer despite a season-sending injury last month, was named the team’s most valuable player during the Royals’ annual awards banquet at Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre. The native of Moscow also earned the Pemberton Homes Top Scorer Award for his 20 goals, 45 assists and 65 points.
The Wilson’s Transportation Top Defenceman Award went to veteran Jordan Fransoo. Fransoo, of North Battleford, Sask., tallied eight goals and added 14 assists, while anchoring both the power play and penalty-killing units.
Defenceman Joe Hicketts was a double winner Sunday. The Kamloops native was named the team’s rookie of the year after scoring six goals and 18 assists, and he was named co-winner, with Logan Fisher, of the scholastic player of the year.
Fisher was also awarded the 2 Burley Men Hardest Worker award, while netminder Patrik Polivka was named the Coca-Cola Unsung Hero. Tim Traber earned the sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ Hearing Most Dedicated Award and the Telus Community Service Award went to Royals captain Tyler Stahl for the second consecutive year.
The Keg Fans’ Choice Award, chosen by online voting, went to forward Brandon Magee. Magee played in all 72 Royals games and collected 30 goals and 30 assists.
The Royals now turn their attention to the Western Hockey League playoffs and a first-round date with the Kamloops Blazers. Game 1 of the best-of-seven series goes Friday in Kamloops.
