Tyler Klymchuk’s sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ rink placed itself into a precarious position with a pair of Monday defeats at the 2013 M&M Meat Shops Canadian Junior Curling Championships in Fort McMurray, Alta.

The provincial champions — with third Corey Chester and second Sanjay Bowry of the Victoria Curling Centre, and lead Rhys Gamache — experienced its first hiccup in a 9-4 loss in nine ends to Saskatchewan’s Brady Scharback in the afternoon.

Team sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ then gave up a steal of one in the 10th end to lose 5-4 to P.E.I.’s Daniel Murray in the nightcap, falling to 3-2 in the standings.

The Klymchuk rink — a split team from Langley and the VCC with coach Todd Troyer (also of Victoria) — faces Alberta’s Thomas Scoffin in its last round-robin game tonight.

Against Saskatchewan, Klymchuk gave up two in the eighth end and allowed a steal of two more in the ninth before shaking hands.

The two losses cluttered up the standings in Pool A. Ontario’s Aaron Squires leads the way at 4-1, thanks to an 8-7 win in an extra end over Scharback in the evening. Saskatchewan is tied with sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ at 3-2, behind Alberta’s 3-1 log.

Will Mahoney of the Yukon is 2-3, along with Murray, and David Kakuktinniq of Nunavet is 0-5. The top four from the pool will advance to the championship round, beginning Wednesday.

Klymchuk could use a hand this afternoon from Alberta, which plays P.E.I., and Saskatchewan, which takes on the Yukon.

In junior women’s play, Corryn Brown of Kamloops hammered Alberta’s Karynn Flory 8-1 in eight ends to improve to 4-1 and stay at the top of Pool A standings.
