The first for local Little League is the District 7 Little League Minor (9-10-year-olds) tournament, which begins this weekend.
The nine-day event will be hosted by National Little League at Jerry Hale Park (Cook St. and Hillside Ave.) Also taking part will be Lakehill, Hampton Park, Beacon Hill, Central Saanich and Layritz, who earlier this week won the city championship.
Round-robin action begins Friday with games at 11:30 a.m., 3 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Opening ceremonies for the event are scheduled for 1 p.m. on Saturday. The playoff round begins July 6 at noon and the final is slated for July 7 at 1 p.m.
The winning team will represent the district at the provincial championship tournament July 13-21 at Layritz Little League.
Rugby teams have medal haul
Island teams were dominating at last weekend’s provincial B2Gold rugby championships at UBC.
The Island South Tide rolled to the Under-15 boys title, finishing the tournament undefeated and outscoring their opponents 155-0.
The Tide beat Vancouver 33-0 in the gold-medal game, while the North Island Tsunami downed Vancouver North 14-5 in the seventh-place game.
On the girls side, the Island Tsunami edged Fraser Valley Green 10-7 in the Under-16 championship game. Fraser Valley had beaten the Island squad in round-robin play, but the Tsunami used a stingy second-half defence to win the final.
Cougars’ stars off to school
Two Victoria Cougars will be continuing their hockey careers at universities this fall.
Brody Coulter, who won the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League scoring title this past season, is staying close to home and will play for the University of Victoria Vikes, while Sam Rice, a VIJHL all-star, will play for the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond.
The Vikes play in the sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ Intercollegiate Hockey League, while Central Oklahoma plays in the American Collegiate Hockey Association.
