Weather conditions factored into two triple-A saʴý High School Football Association games involving Island teams on Friday.

The defending champion Mount Douglas Rams ferried across to the mainland and, after lengthy delays, the No. 1-ranked Rams doubled up on the No. 5 Notre Dame Jugglers 28-14 at Burnaby Lake Sports Complex.

Arriving late, the Rams used just a 10-minute warm-up before hitting the turf.

“First of all, thank you to Notre Dame for accommodating us through our ferry issues,” said Rams head coach Mark Townsend. “I thought our kids showed a lot of perseverance today and Notre Dame deserves a lot credit as they gave all we could handle in the contest.”

Conditions forced teams to keep the ball along the ground and Rams’ Grade 10 quarterback Gideone Kremler ran for a whopping 196 yards and three major scores from 12, 20 and 53 yards. Josh Lucas had opened the scoring on a three-yard scamper.

Ben Pierik also had a big day, rushing with 118 yards for the now 3-0 Rams, who will face the 2-1 New Westminster Hyacks on the mainland next week after they toppled No. 3 Notre Dame 13-10 on Friday.

“Next week, we face an extremely talented New West team, and we will need to play an exceptional game to keep up with the Hyacks,” Townsend said.

Defensively, the Rams were led by Isaiah Cardilicchia's seven tackles and an interception.

The Belmont Bulldogs picked up their first victory in a 12-9 overtime result at home at Goudy Field against the winless Carson Graham Eagles.

A key blocked field-goal attempt salvaged the win for the ’Dogs.

“The monkey is off our back now,” Belmont head coach Alexis Sanschagrin told reporters afterward.

“Carson Graham did enough to earn the chance to win the game with a field goal, but during the timeout I could see the determination and resolve of our boys in their eyes, and somehow I knew we would block the kick.”

In the extra session, the Eagles recorded a field goal to go ahead, but the Bulldogs dug in for the winning major.

Belmont quarterback Brett Milligan ran for 68 yards on a miserable, wet and windy day at Goudy Field, while running back Darien Attridge added 76 yards rushing and also had five tackles.

The Bulldogs are now 1-3 and entertain Notre Dame at Goudy Field on Friday at 3 p.m.
