A four-goal second period and solid netminding from Cody Hagedorn led the Victoria Shamrocks to a 5-4 win over the host New Westminster Salmonbellies in Western Lacrosse Association play on Thursday night.
Hagedorn shutout the ’Bellies in the middle frame as the Shamrocks rebounded from a 2-1 deficit after one period. Victoria was blanked in the third, but kept New West to just two goals over the final 20 minutes to record their third straight win for a 3-0 record.
Sheldon Burns scored a pair of goals for Victoria, while Tristan Rai, Cole Pickup and Chris Wardle added one each. Former Shamrock Mitch Jones had a pair of power-play markers for the ’Bellies and Sean Tyrrell and Anthony Malcolm added one each for the hosts, who fell to 1-1.
Hagedorn made 45 saves for his third win. Alexis Buque faced 39 shots in the New West net.
The Shamrocks return home tonight at 7:30 for Family Night vs. the Coquitlam Adanacs, in which the family of RCMP Const. Sarah Beckett — killed when a pickup slammed into the driver’s side of her police cruiser in Langford in 2016 — will perform the ceremonial ball drop. The team will also be working with the RCMP in accepting donations toward the Const. Sarah Beckett Memorial Scholarship Fund.
CLOVER POINTS: It was announced Thursday that former Shamrocks trainer Jim Cain will be included among the 2017 Canadian Lacrosse Association induction class. The formal ceremonies will be held Nov. 18 at the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame in New Westminster.
