Cam Bedore threw for five touchdowns in the first quarter alone as the undefeated Okanagan Sun rolled to an easy 51-10 victory over an injury-depleted Westshore Rebels club in sa国际传媒 Football Conference play on Saturday afternoon.
The Sun improves to 9-0 on the season while the Rebels fall to 2-7 with just one week to go. Westshore closes its season out Saturday at 3 p.m. versus the visiting Langley Rams, again at Westhills Stadium.
In two games against the Sun this season, the Rebels were man-handled 129-17 as Okanagan continues to easily be the best team in the league, if not the country.
鈥淭he offence didn鈥檛 register a first down or hardly even a positive yard and the defence gave up a lot of explosive plays. It鈥檚 pretty hard to win a football game when the offence doesn鈥檛 move and the defence struggles to defend,鈥 Rebels head coach J.C. Boice said of his club.
鈥淭hey have a lot of athletes over there,鈥 added Boice. 鈥淚 think it鈥檚 the best team in the country. I鈥檓 rooting for them. I want to see western teams do well. I鈥檇 be surprised if that team doesn鈥檛 win a [national] title.鈥
Bedore connected for two touchdowns each to Thomas Huber and Kyle Kawamoto and added the fifth to Pierre-Luc Lord in the opening 15 minutes.
His backup, Josiah Joseph, was intercepted by Jordan Bosse deep in Rebels鈥 territory on his first drive of the afternoon. Joseph did hook up with Shai Ross for a major score before Bosse intercepted him for the second time late in the second quarter as the Sun built up a 45-3 lead at the half.
Huber added field goals of 33, 30 and 40 yards to finish with 21 points on his own for the visitors.
Bryce Couture connected on a 26-yard field goal for the Rebels to make it 38-3 early in the second quarter. Quarterback Talyn Davies and Eric Williams hooked up for a 75-yard TD pass with under four minutes to go in the game for Westshore鈥檚 only major.
This was the Bedore show, however. The 22-year-old quarterbackwas 9-of-11 in passing for 233 yards.
鈥淲e executed right. I had some receivers make some great catches for me and the offensive line was blocking great. We were really clicking in the first quarter,鈥 he said. 鈥淥ur team doesn鈥檛 like to dwell on individual stuff, we like to promote the team aspect.
鈥淚t was an overall good group effort,鈥 Bedore added. 鈥淚 like to think we can go all the way. The way we鈥檙e playing and with the coaches and players we have, I don鈥檛 think a national championship is a stretch at all.鈥
Bedore stretched the Rebels thin early, commanding the game right from the start as Westshore fumbled on its first play and he found Huber for a major on his first play.
鈥淧laying every other team in the BCFC, Okanagan is definitely the top-tiered team,鈥 said Bosse. 鈥淭o be honest, they didn鈥檛 throw anything new at us, no. They just do it all well and our confidence wasn鈥檛 where it needed to be.
鈥淲e just have to put this behind us and focus on next week. There are a lot of injuries, but I still like to think we have a good group of kids here and we make use of them how we can.鈥
EXTRA POINTS: Westshore didn鈥檛 record its initial first down until 1:38 into the second quarter on the drive, which led to the field goal. 鈥 The team was without starting QB Ashton Mackinnon, who is out for the season, with a leg injury. Another big piece of the puzzle, runningback Jordan Worth, was also out.
