U.S. enhancing Chinook programs, sa国际传媒 should follow

D. Gresham: There are several things in your last article that I can't figure out. What do you mean by: 'As we all know...', DFO, CRD, and the Oct. 19 report figure of 1,516 coho?

Answer: There are so many fishing issues that I have to crunch them down to get even a few into my column. Perhaps crunching is the issue.

DFO is the acronym for the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (renamed: Fisheries and Oceans sa国际传媒) which has been common parlance for several decades. CRD means: Capital Regional District, and we have 30,000 saltwater licences.

The Oct. 19 report was from the DFO. On Oct. 4, 1,516 coho were counted at the fence on the San Juan River. This will not reflect the total number as that date is before the run peaks. I have sent you the link to their report on West Coast Vancouver Island salmon returns. I have asked for the East Coast Vancouver Island tables, too.

The "As we all know" portion mentioned that our local saltwater winter fishery is comprised mostly of U.S. origin Chinook; that is because they bumped up their enhancement, while the DFO has not done enough for local Chinook in sa国际传媒. The U.S. composition of our fishery has been so for almost a decade. We should raise our own fish.

AgriMarine: We are happy to announce that we have reached agreement for development and sale of our in-water, closed salmon farm systems in Europe.

Answer: Google: agrimarine.com/news/agrimarinesigns-purchase-and-licens-ing-agreement-with-norweg ian-group, for the news release citing agreement with Akvatech AS for access into Norway, the world's leading farmed fish country. AgriMarine will grant a licence for certain South American, Middle Eastern, North African and Southern European countries. I will be talking with President Robert Walker shortly and will let you know what's up.

Grant Landis: Are you interested in covering a great new device called Thermacell Heated Insoles - wireless, remote-controlled foot warmers that fit in any footwear to keep feet warm in any outdoor setting?

Answer: Yes, yes, yes. I get cold feet all winter long, and will let everyone know how warm warm can be.

Mike Fall: I am interested in the new South Vancouver Island Anglers Coalition lobby. Campbell River is half way up the island; where do you (or the new society) draw the line between South Vancouver Island and the rest of Vancouver Island? For Spring (and/or Chinook) Salmon; having huge lakes in the system makes the Cowichan and the Nanaimo rivers prime candidates for enhancement; do you include them?

Answer: The person to direct your questions to is Chris Bos ([email protected]). He is one of our SFAB representatives who is now part of the lobby. This is a long term issue here as there are no appreciable Chinook stocks from Nanaimo to the Nitinat.

Yes, the Cowichan is in our area - about 3,000 fish this year (only 25 per cent of what it should be) - as its fish migrate past Victoria, and also fill Georgia Strait all winter long. The Cowichan is the indicator "stream" for south coast Chinook.

Bos might suggest forming a group for mid-island waters, and staying in touch with this group. I will do a column saying what the lobby intends to do. Net penning chinook in the CRD makes sense to me and has been discussed.
