The University of Victoria Vikes men’s and women’s rowing eight crews will take on their UBC Thunderbird counterparts in the annual Brown Cup match races Saturday on the Gorge.
It is the first Brown Cup since 2019 after the 2020 and 2021 events were cancelled due to the pandemic.
UBC won the men’s 2019 Brown Cup with UVic capturing the three races prior to that. On the women’s side, the Vikes are defending champions and have won three of the last four Brown Cup races.
The Brown Cup course runs from a standing start near the Tillicum Narrows, with crews achieving their first timed waypoint at 1.3 kilometres at the Selkirk Trestle. A 600-metre sprint from there to the Bay Street Bridge leads into an 850-metre straight line to the Johnson Street Bridge. The last 750-metres cross through the Inner Harbour to the finish line located in front to the SteamShip Grill restaurant.
The varsity races for the Brown Cup begin at 5 p.m. The reserve-team races, for the Campbell-Dowd Cup, are at 4 p.m.
The Brown Cup, presented by Point Hope Maritime, was established in 1992 and runs annually in the last week of March.
