It won’t get any easier tonight and Saturday for the University of Victoria Vikes men’s basketball team.

Off to a 2-4 start in sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ West, the Vikes meet the defending national champion University of Calgary Dinos in the Alberta city. The Dinos, who have had good teams in the past that have come close, finally captured their first U Sports national championship last season. Calgary, ranked No. 3 nationally in the U Sports top-10 poll, hasn’t missed a beat and is off to a 6-0 start in conference play.

The Vikes are coming off a split last weekend in Kamloops against the Thompson Rivers WolfPack as Mason Loewen led UVic in scoring both games.

The UVic Vikes women’s team, meanwhile, takes its 5-1 record into Calgary for its two-game sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ West set beginning tonight against the Dinos (3-3). The Vikes are coming off a sweep of Thompson Rivers (81-62 and 78-59).

The Vikes’ scoring in those games was spread around with Katie Langdon, Aleah Ashlee, Calli McMillan, Amira Giannattasio and Ashlyn Day all contributing.

This weekend concludes a stretch in which both Vikes teams opened with seven of their first eight sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ West games on the road.

Both teams will return from Calgary to meet Trinity Western University Spartans counterparts next weekend at CARSA Gymnasium on the UVic campus.
