The Vikes say they never felt deflated through their five game sa国际传媒 West women鈥檚 basketball losing streak. Nor was there any sign of panic.
They knew, when things were going better earlier in the season, they were good enough to be ranked in the U Sports national top-10 poll.
鈥淲e knew a breakthrough was coming soon. You could feel it,鈥� said Vikes forward Ashlyn Day.
It came Friday evening. The Vikes (8-7) halted their skid with a 67-59 victory over the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack (7-8) on Ken and Kathy Shields Court in CARSA gymnasium.
鈥淲e withstood their runs,鈥� said Sinclair, of the three-point shooting WolfPack.
鈥淲e did our job on our defensive boards by limiting them to one shot. Ashlyn [Day] was very effective, Kristy [Gallagher] showed her leadership and Marissa [Dheensaw] was solid.鈥�
Day led UVic with 20 points and seven rebounds while Dheensaw had 12 points and six rebounds and fifth-year shooting-guard Gallagher reached the 1,000 points sa国际传媒 West regular-season career plateau with 11 points. Aleah Ashlee added 10 points. Leilani Carney led the WolfPack with 18 points.
鈥淲e played hard defensively and shut them down and held them to a low score,鈥� said Day.
鈥淲e made sure not to let them get their offensive rebounds.鈥�
CANADA WEST MEN鈥橲: The Vikes and WolfPack met in the late game Friday at CARSA with host UVic pulling out a 66-62 victory. The Vikes improve to 11-4, while the WolfPack drop to 11-4.
Vikes and WolfPack teams close out their weekend sets today at CARSA with the women鈥檚 game at 5 p.m. and men鈥檚 at 7 p.m.
