The University of Victoria Vikes men’s basketball team put together its first weekend sweep of the young sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ West season, adding a 93-77 victory over the winless Trinity Western Spartans on Saturday after Friday’s lopsided 23-point win. The pair of triumphs evens the Vikes’ mark at 3-3 in the standings, while TWU sits at 0-6.

Victoria has now won the last nine meetings between the teams, dating back to the 2013-14 season, but the visitors required a strong fourth quarter to pull away in this one. Up 66-61 after three quarters, the Vikes buried the Spartans in the final 10-minute session.

Jason Scully led the way offensively for the Vikes for the second straight night, this time with 22 points, one of six Victoria scorers in double digits. Mason Loewen had 15 and Justin Kinnear added 14, while Taylor Montgomery-Stinson and Jordan Chares chipped in with 13 each. Scott Kellum added 12.

Vartan Tanielian was the game’s top scorer with 24 points for the Spartans.

The Vikes women suffered their first two losses of the campaign, following Friday’s setback with a 70-63 loss to the Spartans, who have now won five straight to improve to 5-1. Victoria slips to 4-2.

Again it was Tessa Ratzlaff and Jessie Brown who led the Spartans with 18 and 16 points, respectively. Kristy Gallagher led all scorers, with 21 for the Vikes while Ashlyn Day had 11 and Amira Giannattasio recorded 10.

Coach Dani Sinclair’s Vikes were scoring at a 79.8 points per game entering the weekend, but struggled against the TWU defence and ability to rebound.
