The win streak has reached a half dozen for the UVic Vikes women鈥檚 basketball team after it swept the Lethbridge Pronghorns 72-61 on the Ken and Kathy Shields court at CARSA Performance Gym on Saturday night.
Nicole Karstein led the way with a double-double, recording 16 points and 16 rebounds for the Vikes, who improve to 10-4 in sa国际传媒 West conference play, remaining perfect in 2017.
鈥淲e did what we needed to do to win the game and that鈥檚 what is important,鈥 said Vikes coach Dani Sinclair. 鈥淚n our preparation for next weekend, we know what we need to be better. We committed way too many fouls.鈥
The Vikes overpowered the Pronghorns on rebounds, which played a huge role.
Amira Giannattasio, coming off a 30-point performance in Friday鈥檚 84-59 victory, added 13 points and Kristy Gallagher chipped in with 12. Jenn Bugiardini, who had 26 points Friday, was kept to just five, but she did haul down nine rebounds.
Zoe Dahl led the way for Lethbridge with a game-high 19 points while Teesha Olson and Kathryn Hankins had 13 and 12, respectively, for the visitors, who fell behind 11-3 early.
The Vikes, who host the U Sports national championship tournament in March, were up 17-10 after the first quarter and let a 35-25 lead slip late in the second quarter to end the first half with a 38-33 advantage.
In men鈥檚 play, the Vikes failed to cash in on a strong performance from fifth-year man Grant Sitton, who finished with 32 points and 10 rebounds in a 94-81 loss to Lethbridge.
The Pronghorns used a 20-3 run in the third quarter to improve to 10-6, while the Vikes fall to 5-9 and are winless at home at 0-5. Dejon Burdeaux had 25 points for the visitors.
