The University of Victoria Vikes came apart at the most inopportune time on Saturday night, allowing the Fraser Valley Cascades to come alive in the fourth quarter.
With Victoria up 49-45 entering the last stanza, the Cascades grabbed their first lead of the night with 4:33 to go and outscored the visiting Vikes 30-17 in the fourth for a 75-66 sa国际传媒 West women鈥檚 basketball victory.
鈥淭here was stuff that crept on us through part of the game,鈥 said Vikes head coach Dani Sinclair, who felt her team got away from the game plan.
鈥淎t the end of the day, UFV completely out-competed us, especially in the last five minutes.
鈥淚 thought we stopped playing at times and obviously with some of those turnovers under our own rim, where we let them steal balls right out of our hands. We were casual and they responded from [Friday] night. They played more desperate than we did.鈥
The Vikes now slip to 12-6 in the conference with just one more weekend to go while the Cascades improve to 11-7.
Victoria defeated UFV 68-57 on Friday and got off to a solid 17-9 start after the first quarter on Saturday and led 33-26 at the half.
The Vikes ultimately wasted a solid performance from Jenna Bugiardini, who had 19 points and 16 rebounds. Nicole Karstein and Jenna Krug added 13 points each and eight and six rebounds, respectively.
Defensively the Vikes allowed Sara Simovic to come alive in the fourth with 13 of her 22 overall points. Shayna Litman added 20 and Sydney Williams recorded 11 for the Cascades, who outscored Victoria 49-33 in the second half.
It was a costly third quarter that brought down the men鈥檚 Vikes, ultimately losing 89-79 to the Cascades. Victoria was out-scored 26-15 in the pivotal third and the Vikes slip to 7-11 after the devastating weekend sweep.
Denver Sparks-Guest led UFV (now 9-9) with 19 points while Vijay Dhillon added 17. Justin Kinnear had a game-high 24 for UVic while Scott Kellum added 17.
