The Cloverdale native was recognized for his efforts by claiming the Western Hockey League鈥檚 player of the week honours after recording 12 points (three goals and nine assists) in four games last week.
The Anaheim Ducks prospect, who just recently returned to the WHL club from his stint in pro camps, had a goal and four assists in two home games against the Tri-City Americans; added a goal and two helpers in a loss in Spokane on Friday; and finished it off with a goal and three assists in a victory in Seattle on Saturday.
Soy, playing in his final year of junior eligibility, has points in all five games since his return with four goals and nine assists in total. He currently ranks with the second-highest points per game in the WHL at 2.60 per outing.
鈥淗e鈥檚 been really good. We hoped he would hit the ground running and he sure has,鈥 said Royals general manager Cam Hope, who was joining the team in Alberta while it continues its road trip.
It鈥檚 not always an easy transition for players to return to junior from a stint in the pros, but Soy has accepted his return as a challenge.
鈥淚t鈥檚 not easy, especially if they鈥檙e expected to stay, but in this case, with Tyler, he鈥檚 an unsigned player and I think he thought there was a good chance to come back so his mindset was good,鈥 said Hope. 鈥淲ith the type of team we hope to have this year, and the role he鈥檚 going to play on it, he was excited to come back.鈥
In his five seasons with the Royals, Soy has recorded 119 goals and 129 assists for 248 points over 262 regular-season games.
This is the third time he has been recognized as player of the week following one nod in each of the 2015-16 and 2016-17 campaigns. It is also the eighth time that a Royals鈥 player has been presented the award including: Alex Forsberg (2015-16), Brandon Magee (2014-15), Travis Brown (2014-15), Joe Hicketts (2014-15) and Alex Gogolev (2012-2013).
Meanwhile, Swift Current Broncos netminder Logan Flodell was named goaltender of the week as he won both his starts for the 8-1 club, which was ranked No. 2 by the Canadian Hockey league, behind the No. 1 Victoria Royals.
Flodell stopped 45 shots in a 6-2 victory over the Lethbridge Hurricanes and also shut out the Vancouver Giants, stopping all 38 shots he faced in that victory. He is a perfect 7-0-0-0 with a goals against average of 2.00 and a .940 save percentage.
The Royals will continue their season-long seven-game road trip on Wednesday at Edmonton鈥檚 Rogers Place against the Oil Kings (6 p.m. Pacific start).
