There hasn鈥檛 been an Island dynasty in sa国际传媒 men鈥檚 soccer since Gorge FC won four Province Cups between 2001 and 2010.
What better team to end that drought than Vic West, whose own club legacy includes six Province Cup titles between 1976 and 1984?
Don鈥檛 look now, but Vic West is the last Island club standing in the 2017 Province Cup and faces Aldergrove today in the quarter-finals on the Lower Mainland.
Stefan Fletcher is new to coaching Vic West but is not unaware of the club鈥檚 pedigree.
鈥淭here is a real focus on history at Vic West and we have a two-to-four year plan to be the next team that is a force from the Island,鈥 he said.
Vic West blasted Abbotsford 3-0 in the Province Cup Sweet Sixteen last weekend, while Cowichan FC, Nanaimo United and Bays United all fell.
鈥淲e also beat Cowichan in our last regular-season game [to finish 11-3-4], so things are falling into place for us at the end of the season,鈥 said Vic West mentor Fletcher.
That鈥檚 the best time for it.
The late-season signings of UVic Vikes players Michael Baart and Tanvir Bhandal has really bolstered Vic West鈥檚 chances. Bryan and Craig Taylor and Leo Falzon have provided veteran experience and former J-League 2 and Latvian League professional Sho Goto the sizzle.
鈥淲e have a nice balance,鈥 said Fletcher.
Maybe even enough of one to make a run to a first Province Cup title for an Island team since 2010 and the first for Vic West since the height of Duran Duran in 1984.
