Another medal for Victoria judoka

Victoria Judo Club member Tristan Alexander warmed up for the upcoming national championships by winning a medal at last weekend鈥檚 Edmonton International Judo Tournament at West Edmonton Mall.

But due to a controversial ruling, Alexander鈥檚 medal wasn鈥檛 the colour he had hoped it would be.

Alexander earned a bronze medal in the Under-18, 100-kilogram division, but he was prevented from fighting in the gold-medal match due to a rule only used in Alberta. Alexander won his semifinal bout by way of an arm bar submission, but his victory was reversed when he was told arm bars and choke holds are forbidden in Alberta when fighting at the orange belt level. Despite not being informed of this prior to the bout or during, and following a protest filed by Judo sa国际传媒, Alexander had to forfeit the match and was relegated to the bronze-medal match.

Despite the ruling, that鈥檚 now three medals (two golds and a bronze) in three consecutive tournaments for Alexander, a Grade 9 student at Oak Bay High. And next up are the Canadian championships July 4-7 in Richmond.
