Twenty-six Victoria-area high school football players have taken a big step toward representing the province at a prestigious international tournament in the U.S.
Sixteen players from the Mount Douglas Rams and 10 from the Belmont Bulldogs are among the 127 players invited to the Team sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ Under-18 minicamp May 18-20 in Richmond. From there, Football sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ will name its team, which will represent the province at the FBU International Tournament next January in San Antonio, Texas.
Among the Rams who will be in Richmond are four members from last year’s provincial team — Marcus Davis, Christian Krause, Ashton MacKinnon and Zack Wilkinson — as well as Callum Duke, Peter Elwood, Ross Faulkner, Seye Farinu, Julian Luis, Sheldon Mack, James Nicholas, Aarmin Purewal, Pato Vega, Sean Waugh, Jesse Woolard and Ryan Yeske.
The Bulldogs heading to the minicamp are Court Boice, Tristen Forish, Derion Hunchak, Brady Lockwood, Jamie Pacheco, Matt Pastro, Adam Philip, Sam Varao, Cody Wist and Jordan Worth.
Also, Rams coaches Mark Townsend and Alexis Sanschargrin return to the Team sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ coaching staff.

Climbers achieve new heights
Competing against adults didn’t seem to phase Victoria teens Robert Stewart-Patterson and Elan Jones-McRae as they strive to achieve their goals of becoming climbing champions.
Stewart-Patterson and Jones-McRae, both members of the Boulders Climbing Gym in Central Saanich, cracked the top 10 at the recent U.S. Sport Climbing Series National Open Championships in Boulder, Colorado.
The 17-year-old Stewart-Patterson placed fourth in the speed climbing event, while Jones-McRae, 18, was sixth in the lead or difficulty climbing event. The impressive showings in the U.S. follow on the heels of the pair’s titles at the recent Sport Climbing sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ provincial championships last month at the Central Saanich club.
Now, the Boulders Climbing Gym athletes turn their attention to the Canadian Climbing Championships, which will also be held at the Central Saanich gym May 17-20.

Race Series ends in Sooke
The 2013 Frontrunners Island Race Series wraps up this weekend in Sooke.
The Sooke 10K goes Sunday at 11 a.m. at Edward Milne School. Registration on race day is $35 for adults and $30 for students.
And organizers say, in light of the tragedies at the Boston Marathon, the race will be preceded by a minute of silence to honour those injured and those who lost their lives earlier this week.
