First he was named the top rookie in the sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ Hockey League, now Alex Newhook of the Victoria Grizzlies has gone national.
Newhook has been named the Canadian Junior Hockey League rookie of the year. The 17-year-old St. John’s, N.L., product, garnered the accolade within the 132-team CJHL, through voting by each of its 10-member leagues from across the country.
The other finalists were Zachary Okabe of the Grande Prairie Storm (AJHL), Jack Quinn of the Kanata Lasers (CCHL), Jacob Wasserman of the Humboldt Broncos (SJHL) and Keighan Gerrie of the Thunder Bay North Stars (SIJHL).
In his first year in the Junior A ranks, Newhook led BCHL rookies in points this season with 66 in 45 games on 22 goals and 44 assists. Newhook finished eighth overall in BCHL points despite missing the final three weeks of the season to injury.
The five-foot-11, 185-pound forward’s campaign included a 10-game point streak from Dec. 6 through Jan. 9 where he amassed 26 points, including a trio of four-point efforts.
Newhook helped lead the Grizzlies to the Island Division regular season crown.
In November, Newhook had four points in five games while playing for Team sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ Black at the 2017 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge in Dawson Creek and Fort St. John.
Newhook is committed to Boston College on NCAA Div. 1 scholarship for the 2019-20 season and is ranked No. 2 by the Hockey News for the 2019 NHL draft.
