The Victoria Grizzlies will welcome the remaining 16 sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ Hockey League teams to the Island as the group holds its annual general meeting, beginning today at Bear Mountain Resort and carrying through to Saturday when the board of governors will hammer out a 2015-16 schedule.
The schedule, including the incoming Wenatchee Wild, is then expected to be released early next week.
Meetings — usually held in Richmond — will open with team marketing reps gathering for a session conducted by BCHL communications director Brent Mutis and senior director of partnerships and marketing Adam Less.
According to Mutis, the first board of governors session also begins today with a second to follow on Friday. These sessions include owners or other board-approved reps from each team and are led by board chairman Duncan Wray of the Vernon Vipers, commissioner John Grisdale, executive director Trevor Alto and Mutis.
Separately, head coaches will gather on Friday and the inter-division portion of the schedule and all of the remaining game dates will be sorted on Saturday.
During the three days, various sub-committees of the board of governors deliver their reports at the meetings and any motions arising throughout the year from sub committee meetings are presented, said Mutis.
There will also be a presentation by director of officiating Derek Adams as rule changes are discussed.
The Grizzlies, who are into the final stages of negotiating a new lease agreement with West Shore Parks and Recreation at The Q Centre, will be represented by governor Lance Black, president and alternate governor John Wilson and Lee Richardson.
As for the schedule, the key issue will be the finalization of where the Wenatchee Wild fit in division-wise.
Earlier in May, the BCHL announced that the Chilliwack Chiefs and Prospera Centre will once again play the host team and venue for the fourth annual Bauer BCHL Showcase, happening Sept. 24-27. The extra day was added in order to allow all games to be played on Prospera Centre’s main ice surface.
The Showcase launches the BCHL season.
