Victoria Grizzlies’ rally comes up short

Well, they managed a point.

Well, they managed a point.

The Victoria Grizzlies’ win streak is over at five games as they began their 1,544-kilometre weekend trek with a 4-3 double overtime loss to the host Coquitlam Express on Friday night as Luca Leone ended it at 1:58 of the second extra session.

Down 3-1, the Grizzlies roared back with two straight goals to at least earn a point in their sixth straight saʴý Hockey League outing. The trip continues tonight at 7:30 p.m. in Merritt and then onto Trail for a Sunday afternoon affair.

Alex Ambrosio opened the scoring for the Express at 14:48 of the first period, but the lead didn’t last long as Victoria’s top point-getter Brayden Gelsinger replied at 18:08 of the first period on assists to Dante Hahn and Brett Stirling.

Colton Kerfoot made it 2-1 Coquitlam on a short-handed breakaway at 13:52 of the second period. Kerfoot and Alex McIlmurray then set up Jack Surowiec for a 3-1 lead at 15:19.

Nick Guiney got one back at 18:17 of the middle frame as he recorded his team-leading eighth goal of the season as he and linemate Tyler Welsh and Keyvan Mokhtari continue to provide offence. The three had five-game point streaks coming in with Welsh providing 14 points over 13 games.

Guiney and Mokhtari (with an assist) kept their streaks alive.

“Guiney has done a good job with those guys,” said Grizzlies general manager and head coach Craig Didmon. “He’s smart and he gets pucks to good areas for them and complements those guys really well.”

Didmon also welcomed Mitchell Barker back from his two-game suspension as he got back on a line with Cole Pickup and captain P.J. Conlon.

“We appreciate having him back on that line. He’s just getting better and better,” Didmon said of Barker.

Stirling was credited with a second assist on the night on Guiney’s goal.

Matthew Galajda took the overtime loss in net for the Grizzlies, who are now 8-12-0-3 on the season while Coquitlam is 9-10-1-2.
