The Victoria Grizzlies took a three-game winning streak into Nanaimo on Friday night and were stopped dead in their tracks by the sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ Hockey League’s Island Division-leading Clippers.

The Grizzlies (14-24) won back-to-back games against Nanaimo last week, but a veteran bunch of Clippers (24-10-3) — Nanaimo dressed the maximum six 20-year-olds, while the Grizzlies have just one in captain Marty Westhaver — weren’t about to let that happen again, scoring twice in the first period en route to a 5-0 victory in front of 1,392 fans at Frank Crane Arena.

The home team got things started early, outshooting the Grizzlies 17-9 in the opening period and getting goals from Liam Ryan and Brandon Dent.

The Grizzlies found some life in the second period, but every chance the visitors had, Jordan Naylor was there to turn it aside in the Clippers’ net.

Naylor finished with 26 saves to pick up his fifth shutout of season and earn his 17th win.

Rookie Blake Wood started in goal for the Grizzlies after the Nanaimo product beat the Clippers twice last week. Wood finished with 34 saves.

Sean Donaldson, Ethan Scardina and Mike Kennedy had the other Nanaimo goals. Scardina and Kyler Kovich also chipped in a pair of assists each.

Grizzlies’s star rookie Cody Monds had his 10-game point streak come to an end. Monds’ 35 points leads all BCHL rookies.

The two teams will do it all again tonight at The Q Centre in Colwood to wrap up the pre-Christmas portion the schedule.

LOOSE PUCKS: Grizzlies rookie forward Michael Hoekstra left the game in the second period after taking a high stick to the face and did not return … The Grizzlies were again without four injured players in goaltender Liam Souliere, defenceman Brady MacDonald and forward Eddie Yan and Trevor Bishop … After the Christmas break, the Grizzlies start a lengthy road trip, beginning Jan. 3 in Wenatchee against the Wild.
