Victoria HarbourCats’ relievers save the day

A timely home run and some stellar relief pitching added up to a big victory for the Victoria HarbourCats on Wednesday night.

A timely home run and some stellar relief pitching added up to a big victory for the Victoria HarbourCats on Wednesday night.

Harrison Spohn’s solo homer in the bottom of the seventh inning broke a 3-3 tie and allowed the HarbourCats to beat the Walla Walla Sweets for the second straight night, this time by a 4-3 score in front of 1,648 fans at Wilson’s Group Stadium at Royal Athletic Park.

Michael Musslewhite, Hayden Jaco, Justin Solt, Aidan Goicovich and Owen Sharts held the Sweets off the score sheet after Walla Walla had scored three runs on Victoria starter Mason Shaw. Shaw finished with 31Ú3 innings, giving up two earned runs while striking out four.

Catcher Matthew Clayton went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs to lead the HarbourCats’ attack.

The victory improved the HarbourCat’s second-half record to 8-9 (22-22 overall) and they remain four games back of second-half North Division leader Yakima Valley in the race for the final playoff spot.

The HarbourCats and Sweets wrap up their three-game set tonight at Wilson’s Group Stadium.

EXTRA BASES: The HarbourCats have the weekend off from league play, but will be taking on the Nanaimo senior men’s team tonight at Wilson’s Group Stadium, followed by weekend exhibitions against the Mavericks League all-stars, who are tuning up for their provincial championship tournament.
