Victoria marathon reverts to its 'Royal' ways

More than 9,000 people have taken part in recent Victoria Marathons, which will now go back to being called the Royal Victoria Marathon.

The original Royal Victoria 颅Marathon logo featured a crowned king running in robes. If it were to be revived, it might fittingly feature a picture of Michael J. Fox superimposed because the event is going back to the future.

It will again be titled the Royal Victoria Marathon, its name of 31 years, before it became the GoodLife Fitness Victoria Marathon in 2011. 颅Losing its title sponsor does not threaten the event, say 颅organizers.

鈥淲e have stability and are well managed,鈥 said race 颅director and general manager Cathy Noel. 鈥淧articipants won鈥檛 notice an impact.鈥

The split was amicable.

鈥淚t has been an honour to be title sponsor of the Victoria Marathon for the last decade,鈥 said David Patchell-Evans, GoodLife Fitness founder and CEO, in a statement.

鈥淲hile GoodLife will not retain title sponsorship this year, our affinity and belief in this event, the organizers, runners and the community of volunteers who make it possible, is unwavering. The Royal Victoria Marathon will always hold a special place for myself and the entire GoodLife family and we look forward to being part of the event in the future.鈥

Noel added: 鈥淲e are extremely grateful for [GoodLife Fitness鈥橾 support over the years.鈥

The biggest question facing the Victoria Marathon Society, following the 2020 cancellation due to the pandemic, is not whether the race will go ahead in 2021 but in what manner on Oct. 10. With all Canadians who want a vaccination likely to have one by the fall, live sports is projected to return by late summer and fall.

鈥淸But] it鈥檚 not like flipping a switch,鈥 said Noel.

These events take months of planning and a decision will be made in the 鈥渆arly spring鈥 whether to go live or virtual, or some combination thereof, for the 41st Royal Victoria Marathon.

鈥淭he question will come down to what can we do at that point of the year?鈥 said Noel.

Nine months out, that question simply can鈥檛 be answered at this time. It鈥檚 part of the over-arching split sport faces this year due to the vaccine rollout timeline. Winter and spring events and leagues are in trouble but summer and fall events and leagues stand a far better chance of taking place. Case-in-point is the other big Victoria annual running festival that bookends the season 鈥 the sa国际传媒 10K 鈥 which will have to go virtual this year because it is a spring event in April.

鈥淲hat we do know is that people want to get out there and be active,鈥 said Noel. 鈥淎nd we will keep them motivated throughout the year.鈥

Noel said a monthly Zoom speakers鈥 series will begin Jan. 25 featuring prominent individuals in the running world.

It is a victory, say organizers, that a race can be contemplated at all in 2021.

鈥淭here is no doubt that 2020 was a challenging year, not just for the Victoria Marathon Society but for all races,鈥 said society president Jonathan 颅Foweraker.

鈥淪tarting the year with the news that we are returning to the name Royal is exciting for us, and we hope for all our participants over the years. We know many still have great memories of the Royal Victoria Marathon, not to mention all of the memorabilia that came with it.鈥

That includes old T-shirts, medals and programs emblazoned with the old running king.

More than 9,000 participants take part annually in the event, which is a qualifier for the 颅Boston Marathon, and which also includes half marathon, 8K, and 1.5K kids鈥 run distances.
