Victoria native Marcelle in hunt for top CIS honour

Few athletes in Canadian university sports history have accomplished what Shanice Marcelle of Victoria has by winning the CIS national championship in each of her five years of eligibility.
Few athletes in Canadian university sports history have accomplished what Shanice Marcelle of Victoria has by winning the CIS national championship in each of her five years of eligibility.

Marcelle completed the quintet of CIS women鈥檚 volleyball titles with the UBC Thunderbirds dynasty earlier this spring, and on Wednesday was nominated for the BLG Awards for the second time in three years. There are eight finalists for the BLG Awards 鈥 four female and four male from each of sa国际传媒 West, Ontario, Quebec and Atlantic. The awards go annually to the top CIS male and female athlete in sa国际传媒. The 2013 BLG Award winners will be announced during a ceremony April 29 at the John Bassett Theatre in the Toronto Convention Centre with the male and female winner each receiving $10,000 post-graduate scholarships. The BLG Awards show will be broadcast on Sportsnet in May.

鈥淚t鈥檚 kind of crazy to win a national championship in each of your years of eligibility,鈥 said Marcelle, the former Spectrum standout in high school.

鈥淚 don鈥檛 think it鈥檚 really sunk in. It鈥檚 been an amazing five years. And to top it off with another BLG nomination is an honour because there are so many terrific athletes in sa国际传媒 West.鈥

Marcelle, 22, graduates from UBC with a degree in kinesiology.

But that degree will have to wait to get used.

The two-time CIS MVP and five-time CIS first-team all-star could be graduating to bigger things on the hardcourt or sand.

鈥淭he Olympics has always been my goal, whether it鈥檚 Rio 2016 or in 2020,鈥 said the Islander, who will take part in the national team camp later this month in Winnipeg.

Marcelle also has options on sand. She was the 2009 sa国际传媒 Summer Games gold medallist in beach volleyball and played in the 2010 world junior championships after getting her start on the old Gorge Park courts.

鈥淲hich version of the sport I prefer is a tough question,鈥 admitted Marcelle, who is back on the Island helping coach her old Victoria Titans club before leaving for the national team camp.

鈥淚t depends on what I鈥檓 playing at the time and right now that鈥檚 indoor volleyball. But I do miss the beach.鈥

In club play, Marcelle plans to explore pro volleyball opportunities in Europe.

The other female BLG nominees for 2013 are basketball player Justine Colley of St. Mary鈥檚, hockey player Melodie Daoust of McGill and rugby player Britt Benn from Guelph. The male nominees are hockey player Lucas Bloodoff of St. Mary鈥檚, wrestler David Tremblay from Concordia, soccer player Gagan Dosanjh of UBC and football star Kyle Quinlan of McMaster.

This is the third consecutive year that a UBC athlete from Victoria has been nominated for the female BLG Award with Marcelle in 2011 and 2013 and Vic High grad and field hockey star Robyn Pendleton in 2012.
