Both Victoria Curling Centre rinks got off to tough starts at the sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ Junior Women’s and Junior Men’s Curling Championships at the Royal City club in New Westminster on Tuesday afternoon.

Up against a pair of tournament favourites, Mariah Coulombe’s VCC rink — with third Taylor Reese-Hansen, second Jordan Koster and lead Kirsten Zucchet — dropped a 7-3 decision to Sarah Daniels’ Delta Thistle foursome that includes local Sydney Brilz at lead.

Brilz played with Coulombe the past two years when they finished fourth and third, respectively, at provincials.

Kyle Habkirk, who is from the mainland but is playing out of the VCC with rinkmates Duncan Silversides at third, second Ryan Cassidy and lead Alex Horvath, was defeated 8-3 in eight ends by Tyler Tardi of Langley/Royal City.

Habkirk was slated to face another tough opponent, the Royal City’s Matthew McCrady, in Tuesday night’s draw while Coulombe tackled Cieraa Fisher of Chilliwack. Neither score was available by press time.

Corryn Brown’s Kamloops foursome, which includes Marika Van Osch of Nanaimo at third, was also set to begin week-long play among the eight junior women’s teams in the late draw.

Also on Tuesday afternoon, Jordan Kiss’s Royal City rink, including Derek Chandler of Victoria at lead, was defeated 9-7 by Thomas Love of Vernon.

Play continues with Draws 3, 4 and 5 today at 9 a.m., 2 and 7 p.m. Finals are slated for Sunday at 11 a.m. for the junior women and 3 p.m. for the junior men.

The winners will represent the province at the Canadian Junior Curling Championships, slated for Jan. 21-29 at the Esquimalt Curling Club and Archie Browning Sports Centre.
