Six points each from Corey Small, Cory Conway and captain Scott Ranger paced the Victoria Shamrocks to their second straight win, a 13-6 effort over the Maple Ridge Burrards on Sunday night at Planet Ice Cam Neely Arena.

The win evens the Shamrocks’ record at 2-2 and the team will play host to the same Burrards on Friday at 7:45 p.m. at The Q Centre.

Small scored four times and added two assists, while Conway had five helpers to go with his lone goal. Ranger had his second-straight two-goal performance with four assists as the team’s offence has kicked into gear the past two games.

Newcomer Daryl Veltman and veteran Rhys Duch added a goal and three assists each, while Jesse King and Chris Wardle chipped in with a goal and an assist each. Karsen Leung and Ben McCullough rounded out the scoring for the Shamrocks.

Mike Mallory and Connor Goodwin had two goals apiece for the Burrards, while Andrew Murphy and Tom Johnson had the other tallies.

Cody Hagedorn made 28 saves to earn his first victory in goal for Victoria, while Frank Scigliano faced 44 total shots in net for Maple Ridge, which falls to 0-2.

Conway currently leads the Western Lacrosse Association in points with 15 (five goals and 10 assists), one point up on Duch (five goals and nine assists) and New Westminster’s Logan Schuss (four goals and 10 assists), but Schuss has played one fewer game.

“Cory is a great player. Obviously, we missed him last year and we’re glad that things worked out and he was able to come back and take another run at it again this year,” Shamrocks general manager Chris Welch said recently of the local product.

The right-hander is known as one of the better passers in the league.

“Out the front door he does everything well. The kid has incredible vision on the floor and the kid feeds as well as anybody in the sport,” said Welch. “The one knock is he has a great shot, he doesn’t use it enough. I think everyone tries to get him to shoot more.

“He’s a totally unselfish guy who sees himself first and foremost as a playmaker, but he’s also a great finisher.”
