Brent McMahon of Victoria, among the 48 Island athletes at the 2012 Summer Olympics, announced post-London he was switching to longer-distance triathlons.
He really meant it.
McMahon won the North American Ironman 70.3 championship Saturday in St. George, Utah. The 70.3 designation is the now-applied name for the Half Iron distance.
鈥淚t looks like I鈥檝e figured it out [the longer distances],鈥 said McMahon, from Utah. 鈥淭his was the fastest field there will be this season outside of the world championships. I felt strong and in control. I鈥檓 suited for this style of racing.鈥
The two-time Olympian captured the $15,000 first prize.
Asked about the differences between the 70.3 and shorter Olympic distance, McMahon said it鈥檚 a matter of 鈥減acing and nutrition.鈥
But he hasn鈥檛 ruled out a run for the Olympic hat-trick at Rio 2016.
鈥淚鈥檒l make my decision about Rio in 2014,鈥 said McMahon.
