Kevin Carrigan鈥檚 tenuous grip on what would have been his first sa国际传媒 Amateur title slipped through his hands on Friday, plummeting to a 2-over-par 72 at Copper Point Golf Club.
The second- and third-round leader struggled mightily in the last round. He did birdie the opening hole to take a two-shot lead, but bogeys on hole Nos. 4, 7 and 10 and a disheartening triple-bogey on the par-3 11th sealed his fate.
He battled back with a birdie at the 15th and eagled the finishing hole to finish a shot back of Charlie Hughes of Langley and Adam Svensson of Surrey.
Hughes claimed the 111th sa国际传媒 Amateur title on the second playoff hole after a final round of even par 70 that left him at 12-under 272 for the 72-hole event.
Svensson had the round of the day at 5-under 65 and appeared destined to win, but Hughes birdied the last hole to force the playoff and then claimed the famed Bostock Trophy.
鈥淭here are a lot of great champions on this trophy and I have kind of snuck my name on one piece there, one slot, so it feels good,鈥 the newly crowned champion told sa国际传媒 Golf officials afterward.
Carrigan managed to hang on to third at 11-under 273 and will be a part of Team sa国际传媒 for the Canadian Amateur, set for his home course of Royal Colwood, along with Gorge Vale, from Aug. 6-9.
He has now finished second, third (twice), fourth and eighth over the last five years.聽
鈥淲e really want to take it to those Ontario boys. I think the Willingdon Cup trophy [the interprovincial competition] should stay here,鈥 Hughes said of joining Carrigan and Svensson as teammates.
Carrigan, the 2012 Canadian Men鈥檚 Mid-Amateur champion, had already earned a spot in the national amateur championship and will also play in the RBC Canadian Open on the PGA Tour later this season.
Meanwhile, Brent Wilson of Gorge Vale turned in a final round 70 (280 total) to place tied for seventh in the sa国际传媒 Amateur field, along with Nanaimo鈥檚 Zach Anderson.
Anderson and Darren Day, also of Royal Colwood, began the day tied for fourth and seventh respectively, but also tumbled down the leaderboard with rounds of 3-over and 9-over respectively. Day finished tied for 19th along with Victoria Golf Club鈥檚 Craig Doell.
Only four players broke par on the final day.
