Jessie Brown recorded a game-high 34 points to pace the Trinity Western University Spartans to a come-from-behind 84-79 victory over the University of Victoria Vikes in women鈥檚 basketball play at CARSA High Performance Gym on Saturday night. Game 3 goes today at 2 p.m. at UVic.

鈥淕reat credit to Trinity, for sure. They wouldn鈥檛 go away. They played well down the stretch and defended well and we did not,鈥 said Vikes head coach Dani Sinclair, whose team needed a couple of key stops in the end, but didn鈥檛 get them.

鈥淲e got caught watching the ball. We got back-cut a number of times and left a girl who can shoot the ball pretty well wide open,鈥 she said of Brown. 鈥淵ou鈥檙e going to get hurt if you do that consistently.

鈥淚t鈥檚 somewhat baffling. She does a good job of creating her shot, back-cutting and all that, but at least make her work for it.鈥

Brown knocked down one of her six three-pointers in the dying two minutes, added a long deuce and another two points with 56 seconds to go as the Spartans bounced back from 25-14, 35-31 and 59-56 deficits by quarters. The Vikes were up 59-49 late in the third. Victoria was behind 82-79 late and had two chances to tie, but Kristy Gallagher and Amira Giannattasio both missed three-point attempts. It鈥檚 now down to a one-game-takes-all scenario with the winner advancing to face MacEwan University in Edmonton next weekend.

鈥淭his will show our character, show what we鈥檙e made of. They have a lot of spirit over on their side and we need to show what we have,鈥 Sinclair said.

Jenn Bugiardini led the Vikes with 27 points. Both teams had four players in double digits as Giannattasio and Gallagher each had 13 and Nicole Karstein added 16 for Victoria.
