It may take a few seasons after expansion, but parity usually comes.
The University of Victoria Vikes are 8-0 against the University of Northern sa国际传媒 Timberwolves, with a 29-8 goals advantage, since UNBC entered sa国际传媒 West men鈥檚 soccer in 2012.
But the Vikes, trailing 3-1 at 62 minutes, needed a spirited rally to pull out a 5-3 victory Saturday night over the Timberwolves at Centennial Stadium.
鈥淲e were in trouble . . . I鈥檓 very proud of the way our guys battled back hard,鈥 said Vikes head coach Bruce Wilson.
Matt Jubinville鈥檚 second goal of the night made it 3-1 before UVic pulled level over the next three minutes through Sam Prette and Gareth Langdon. The winner came on a interesting set piece. When UVic coach Wilson captained the Canadian national team, including at the 1984 L.A. Olympics and 1986 World Cup, back-line mate Ian Bridge of Victoria would sneak up for scoring chances. Wilson has had centre-back Keevan Webb move up to great advantage this season and Webb headed home a Mackenzie Rigg free kick to make it 4-3. Webb also scored in UVic鈥檚 3-0 victory over UNBC on Friday.
鈥淚鈥檓 originally a midfielder so I like to go forward on the field,鈥 said Webb, a graduate of Belmont, who played the last two years for Peninsula College of Port Angeles and enters this season as a third-year Vikes rookie.
鈥淏ut as a centre back, you can鈥檛 get caught up field, so you have to be careful.鈥
About his new centre back, Wilson said: 鈥淗e is the missing piece . . . he is what we were looking for.鈥
Dominic Colantonio closed out scoring. Craig Gorman scored UVic鈥檚 first goal for his third of the season.
The Vikes, undefeated at 2-0-1, are at Trinity Western and Fraser Valley next weekend. The Timberwolves dropped to 0-2.
