The University of Victoria Vikes made a statement Friday night in Edmonton with a 92-71 sa国际传媒 West men’s basketball victory over the University of Alberta Golden Bears.UVic (4-1) is the third-ranked team in the U Sports national top-10 poll and the Golden Bears (2-3) are ranked No. 5 behind the top-ranked Carleton Ravens and second-ranked University of Ottawa Gee Gees. The Brock Badgers are No. 4.

Trent Monkman led UVic with 18 points while Ethan Boag added 14 points and rookies Izzy Helman and Renoldo Robinson 12 points each in a reprise of last year’s sa国际传媒 West playoff final won by the Vikes.

Meanwhile, Alberta (4-1) defeated UVic (2-3) 67-64 on Shae McCusker’s buzzer-beating three pointer in the earlier sa国际传媒 West women’s game in Edmonton. Kate Johnson led the Vikes with 19 points while Ashlyn Day, who led sa国际传媒 West with a 34.0 points-per-game scoring average going into the game, added 14 points.

The Vikes and Golden Bears men’s and women’s squads meet again tonight in Edmonton.
