Vikes spoil UNBC home debut

On Saturday at Prince George, the host University of Northern sa国际传媒 Timberwolves were playing their first-ever home game in sa国际传媒 West, and the Vikes manhandled them 10-0.

"With the score the way it was, we were able to work on some things,'' UVic coach Tracy David said. "UNBC battled for the entire 90 minutes, and they never gave up. I think everyone knows that UNBC will be in tough this year, and it will take some years for them to develop.''

Lindsay Hoetzel also scored twice for the Vikes, who now have a record of two wins and a tie.

The other goals were added by Jackie Harrison, Sarah Douglas, Jana Yates, Cassie Dennis and Janelle Smith. Steph Parker and Tanya Jones shared the shutout.

UNBC has a tie in three starts this year.

The Vikes pressured the Timberwolves all game as UNBC goalkeeper Jordan Hall made 16 saves.

After dropped a 3-1 decision to the Trinity Western Spartans on Friday, the Vikes men were back in action Saturday on the road against the UBC Thunderbirds, dropping a 1-0 decision.

The Vikes, defending Canadian Interuniversity Sport champions, have a 2-2 record.

Both UVic teams are back in action next weekend with games in Alberta against Lethbridge and Calgary.

- The young UVic women's field hockey team opened the sa国际传媒 West season with a 3-1 road victory Saturday over the Calgary Dinos.

UVic coach Lynne Beecroft has started the season with 11 rookies on the team.

In the 18th minute, UVic veteran Kyla Kirby opened the scoring, converting a penalty stroke.

Early in the second half, Carolina Romeo tied the contest for Calgary.

Kayleen van der Ree restored the lead for UVic with a field goal, and then Rosie Beale added the insurance goal off a short corner.

The teams meet again today in Calgary.
