The University of Victoria Vikes men's soccer team put in a dominating performance for 90 minutes Friday and blanked the Mount Royal Cougars from Calgary 3-0.

With the win, the Vikes advance to the sa国际传媒 West Final Six playoffs starting Thursday in Edmonton.

The Vikes opened the scoring early at Centennial Stadium as Nicholas Mavrikos knocked in a loose ball at the three-minute mark after an Andrew Ravenhill corner kick. On the play, Cougars' goalkeeper Kamil Zielinski attempted to knock the ball away but it dropped right at the feet of Mavrikos.

UVic continued to pressure and had at least eight more great scoring chances in the first half, including three by Cam Stokes.

"That was a scary type of game," said UVic's Cam Hundal, who scored the last two goals of the game in the second half. "We were only up 1-0 at the half but we just wanted to keep pressing in the second half and make sure that we didn't concede anything.

"We played the speed game very well tonight and at times, Mount Royal had no chance to recover.

"I was probably a little more selfish on offence tonight because I wanted to score a goal before the start of the playoffs."

Those were the first goals of the season for Hun-dal, who was named the most valuable player as the Vikes won last year's Canadian Interuniversity Sport championship at Centennial Stadium.

The Vikes now have a record of six wins, five losses and two ties. They close out the season tonight at 7: 15 at home against the Winnipeg Wesmen. Mount Royal drops to 4-9-1.

"It was nice to see Cam score some goals," said UVic coach Bruce Wilson. "He has been electrifying for us all year but he has had some trouble scoring goals.

"What I liked about our performance was that we dominated but we didn't give them very much on offence. I thought our goalkeeper [Elliot Mitrou] and the back four did an outstanding job."

The speedy Hundal gave the Vikes a 2-0 lead during the 65th minute when he knocked in a rebound from a Mavrikos header.

Then in the dying minutes of the game, Hundal showed his speed again with a great individual effort.
