Megan Woodland and her University of Victoria Vikes teammates had to settle on being second best at the 2013 Canadian University/College Championships at Val des Lacs Golf Club in Ste-Sophie, Que., on Friday.
Woodland鈥檚 6-over par 77 on the last of four rounds left her second overall to University of Montreal Carabins鈥 Sabrina Sapone.
Sapone turned in a 3-over 74 to finish the event at 293, six shots better than Woodland.
Victoria鈥檚 Brynn Tomie placed third with a 79 that left her with a 302 total, one shot up on Stephanie Wong of the UBC Thunderbirds.
Montreal also placed first in the team title, eight shots ahead of the UVic Vikes, who finished another eight shots better than UBC in third.
Vikes head coach Bryan Carbery was honoured as women鈥檚 coach of the year, capping his 15th and final year as coach for the UVic golf teams.
鈥淭he girls struggled on the front nine and just didn鈥檛 seem to click today,鈥 said Carbery. 鈥淲atching golf as a coach you always get a sense for what is going on and it just wasn鈥檛 happening for us today.
鈥淢ontreal is an outstanding team and they have done a great job with their team. I can鈥檛 say enough about how far the competitiveness at this tournament has come over the years. Montreal is very powerful and will be for the next two years.
鈥淚鈥檓 really proud of the girls this season,鈥 added Carbery. 鈥淚 am retiring after this season and it has been a good 15 years and really, just a blast.鈥
UVic鈥檚 Emily Nicol was 18th overall with a 318 total after a final round 85, just ahead of teammate Michaela Misener who had a 78 on Friday.
Michaela Abey, also of the Vikes, just missed the cut to compete on the final day after a 241 total over the first three rounds.
It was the second straight year that Woodland placed second overall.
Meanwhile, the Vikes鈥 men鈥檚 team finished 10th overall in team standings led by Jesse Teron鈥檚 1-under 70 on Friday that left him at a total of 296.
That was well back of winner Ugo Coussaud of Laval whose 72 Friday left him at 280, one shot ahead of Chris Hemmerich of Guelph. UBC鈥檚 Andrew Ledger was third at 282.
Matthew Broughton, Carson Kallis and Jamie Cartwright were 42nd, 48th and 56th respectively for the Vikes, who finished 61 shots back of team champion UBC.
