As a football instructor specializing in quarterbacking, throwing mechanics and the passing game, J.C. Boice has worked with players and staffs from big-time U.S. collegiate NCAA conferences such as the SEC, ACC Pac-12 and Big Ten.

He now begins one of his greatest challenges as the new head coach of the Westshore Rebels of the sa国际传媒 Junior Football Association. Training camp opens at Westhills Stadium on Monday for a club that went 2-8 in both 2013 and 2014. Training camp hours are 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. daily.

With his background, there is certainly no secret to the offensive approach the Rebels will use under Boice.

鈥淲e鈥檙e going to throw the ball,鈥 he said.

Energy also certainly won鈥檛 be an issue, as the Rebels are the first BCFC team to open training camp.

鈥淲e鈥檙e getting an early start,鈥 said Boice.

鈥淲e鈥檝e upgraded the talent and these 80 kids are going to be working really hard.鈥

Boice said he has recruited hard in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, and the Island also provides him with a solid foundation through the likes of the sa国际传媒 high school dynasty Mount Douglas Rams鈥 program.

An accomplished instructor with the U.S.-based National Football Academies, Boice estimates he spends 125 days a year on the road at instructional camps. It鈥檚 a skill set he will transfer to the Rebels head coaching role.

鈥淭he best coaches are the best teachers,鈥 said Boice, a native of Oregon.

鈥淎nd the best players have the best understanding of the game of football. We teach the game of football.鈥

The regular season for Westshore begins July 25 at the Apple Bowl in Kelowna against the Okanagan Sun.

The home opener, on Aug. 1 at Westhills Stadium, is the Island derby against the historically national-level contender Vancouver Island Raiders from Nanaimo.
