White Rock/South Surrey is the only undefeated team through four days of competition at the 9-10 Little League provincial baseball championship being held at Layritz Little League Park. So far, White Rock has knocked off Forest Hills (11-0), Little Mountain (16-7) and Beacon Hill HIll (16-5), with their only tight game a 2-0 victory over New Westminster on Tuesday.
鈥淚 think they鈥檝e just probably played together a while,鈥 Layritz Little League president Jenna Hiser said about White Rock/South Surrey. 鈥淭hey鈥檙e quick, they鈥檝e done their drills, they don鈥檛 make a lot of errors. They鈥檙e talented kids.鈥
Layritz was close to closing the standings gap on the Lower Mainlanders in the late game on Tuesday, but their Little Mountain opponents rebounded in the fifth and sixth innings to force an extra inning, and downed the home team 9-7. In the other game Tuesday, Forest Hills edged Beacon Hill 6-5.
As far as overall standings for the six teams participating in the championship, it鈥檚 a gridlock, as Layritz, New Westminster, Forest Hills and Little Mountain are all even at 2-2, and Beacon Hill is 0-4.
The round-robin continues today when New Westminster takes on Forest Hills at noon, followed by Beacon Hill and Little Mountain at 3 p.m., and Layritz gets a shot at White Rock/South Surrey at 6 p.m. Thursday is a rain day for make-up games, if necessary, and the semifinals take place on Friday at 2 and 5 p.m. The final is Saturday at 1 p.m.
