Women golfers eye Cordova Bay repeat

Megan Woodland led the University of Victoria Vikes women's golf squad to the team title at last year's Vikes Shootout at Cordova Bay.

The fourth-year player also took the individual crown. Woodland and the rest of her mates will be looking to repeat at the Shootout on Monday and Tuesday, back at Cordova Bay.

"Our women's team is really solid," said UVic coach Bryan Carbery. "They are ranked No. 10 in the NAIA [National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics]. I expect to see UVic and Concordia battling it out for the team title."

There are eight teams entered in the 54-hole competition for the men while seven women's squads will be vying for the title. The eight men's teams are Alberta, Calgary, Mount Royal, Simon Fraser, UVic, Concordia from Portland, Northwest Christian from Eugene, Oregon, and Cor-ban from Salem, Oregon. Corban does not have a women's team entered.

"Right now, I'm unsure about my fifth player but Megan Woodland, Brynn Tomie, Emily Nicol and Michaela Abey will be in the women's lineup," said Carbery. "On the men's side, the Hollands [James and Sam] will play but after that it is a toss up.

"I think it will be a real dogfight for the men's title between Concordia, Alberta and UVic."

The men will be busy on Monday, playing 36 holes of golf and then finish it off with another 18 on Tuesday. The women will play 18 holes each day. The teams are made up of five players and the top four scores count each round.

The teams will have the opportunity to play a practice round today and then there will be shotgun starts on Monday and Tuesday at 8: 30 a.m.

"Tuesday will be the end of our winter season," said Carbery. "Then we will have some time to work on problem areas."

The Canadian University/College championships are scheduled for May in Montreal. The NAIA championships are also in May with the women going to Lincoln, Nebraska, and the men back to Salem. Woodland won last year's NAIA individual title while Carson Kallis from UVic was victorious on the men's side.
