The Victoria Eagles were on the receiving end of another dose of Colton Wood on Thursday night, but they fought the hard-throwing right-hander off nicely.

Wood, the Victoria Mariners’ pitching ace, faced the crosstown sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ Premier Baseball League opponents for the third time in three meetings at Lambrick Park, but the two battled to a 3-3 tie after 10 innings when play was suspended due to a bylaw. Fans went home more than satisfied, though, after a wonderful game.

After a loss and a win in the first two, Wood went eight innings but was not the pitcher of record as the Mariners and Eagles battled for almost 31Ú2 hours.

The two Victoria teams will end it at a later date and meet up once more this season.

Dan Phillips came on in relief of Wood in the ninth but couldn’t hold a 3-2 lead secured when Evan Willow came across with the lead run for the M’s. Brendan Somers was hit by a pitch by Eagles reliever Ty Jocko with the bases loaded in the top of the second extra inning.

Wood cruised through his first two innings, facing the minimum, and had two out in the third before Zane Takhar and Ben Goertzen put together back-to-back singles. But Wood struck out Kyle Murai to end the threat.

Eagles starter Riley Edmonds matched Wood with four strikeouts through the first three innings as he moved the ball around nicely.

The Eagles struck first in the bottom of the fourth as Tony Ebbs-Canavan’s single to left scored Brandon Feldman with two outs. Feldman had singled to right and advanced to second on a ground out.

It was tied at 1-1 in the top of the sixth as Lucas Piechnik led off with a double and scored one out later when David Warren’s squibbler, off the end of his bat, got away from Eagles first baseman Brett Hull.

Edmonds had a strong outing with just three hits allowed and eight strikeouts over seven innings but gave way to Eric Hegadoren in the eighth inning. The six-foot-nine right-hander walked Jesse Mycock, who then stole second and scored on a flare to shallow right by Warren.

Hegadoren then walked the bases loaded with two outs and was replaced by Jocko, who induced Somers to fly to centre.

The Eagles wouldn’t go away, though, as Vinny Martin doubled down the left-field line to score Zane Takhar with two outs in the bottom of the eighth to tie it 2-2.

The heroics continued in the ninth when Murai singled in Will Wild to make it 3-3.
