Some of the top young squash players from around Western sa国际传媒 and the Western U.S. will invade Shawnigan Lake School this weekend for the third annual Shawnigan Junior Squash Open.

Boys and girls from sa国际传媒, Alberta, Washington and California take to the courts Friday through Sunday in novice up to elite divisions.

The top-ranked American boy in the under-17 division, Zane Magee-Lowdermilk, comes in as the top seed on the elite boys side, and he's followed closely by second seed Bransten Ming, a Grade 10 at Shawnigan Lake School.

The Camosun College Chargers golf team had a strong start to the Pacwest season last weekend, finishing second at the Thompson Rivers Invitational at the Dunes in Kamloops.

The Chargers, led by veteran Jarred Callbeck, finished five shots back over overall winner University of the Fraser Valley. Third place went to the Vancouver Island University Mariners.

In the individual race, Callbeck fired rounds of 70 and 75 to finish sixth, while fellow Chargers Jared Hundza (72, 74) and Grant Maskiewich (76, 70) finished tied for eighth.

The second tournament of the Pacwest season goes this weekend at Hazelton Golf Club in Surrey, hosted by the Kwantlen University Eagles.

Victoria's Maddie Secco helped sa国际传媒 national junior women's field hockey team take a giant step toward the 2013 Junior World Cup.

Secco, who currently plays for Stanford University in the NCAA, scored both Canadian goals in a 2-2 tie with Uruguay on Tuesday at the Pan American Junior Championships in Guadalajara, Mexico. sa国际传媒's record in the tournament now stands at 1-1 and they'll take on Argentina on Friday. The top two teams will earn berths in next year's Junior World Cup. Victoria's Kathleen Leahy also plays for the Canadian team.

On the men's side in Guadalajara, sa国际传媒, with Victoria's James Kirkpatrick in the lineup, was playing Uruguay late Wednesday after coming off a 12-0 victory over Puerto Rico in their opener. Next up for sa国际传媒 at the tournament is a match against Mexico on Friday.

Former national team 1,500-metre specialist Geoff Martinson showed he still has the wheels after he cruised to victory in the second annual McNeill Bay halfmarathon last Sunday.

Martinson, a former UVic Vike track star and 2011 world championships semifinalist, won the Oak Bay event in a time of 1 hour 11 minutes and 7 seconds. The top women was Claire Morgan, who defended her title with a time of 1: 25: 38.

In the accompanying Litespeed 5K, Laurence Coogan crossed the line first with a time of 17: 21, while Sara Ellison was the top women with a time of 23: 08.

The races drew nearly 300 competitors and funds raised from the event will be donated to Cops for Cancer and the Oak Bay High leadership group.

Water polo enthusiasts will want to be at Crystal Pool this weekend as Water Polo sa国际传媒 is hosting a coaches clinic.

Shane Pope, Water Polo sa国际传媒's coaching facilitator based in Vancouver, will be on hand to train and certify coaches and deliver the new I Love Water Polo program. The program was developed by former Olympian Dave Hart and is an introductory grass-roots learn-to-play program for children aged 8 to 12.
