They may be going by default, but a young group of District 7 All-Stars from Victoria plan on making some noise at the Senior League Softball World Series starting Sunday in Sussex County, Delaware.
When the Ontario zone champions declined to take part in the Canadian championship series due to funding problems, the Victoria all-stars jumped at the chance to represent sa国际传媒 at a Little League world championship.
鈥淲e鈥檙e taking a young team with most eligible to return next year and the year after so it鈥檚 more of an experience thing this year, but we think we鈥檒l do OK ,鈥 said District 7 All-Stars coach Darryl Gordon, whose squad is made up of girls aged 14 to 17.
The squad from Victoria will depart today for a long travel day to Delaware where they鈥檒l open group play Sunday against the champion from the U.S. Southeast zone. And Gordon will go to his go-to arm in the opener.
鈥淎ly Gschiel is our most experienced pitcher so we鈥檙e confident about our chances in our first game,鈥 Gordon said.
The Victoria team 鈥 made up of six players from Layritz and five from Hampton 鈥 also includes Andie Stevens, Emily Hiser, Gillian Goldsworthy, Hayley Gordon, Lin Robinson, Rachel Bobroske, Ruby Ortlieb, Sydney Ferguson, Taylor Brantner, Zoe Kinakin. They will play in Pool B in Delaware, along side champions from Europe-Africa (Prague Little League from the Czech Republic), U.S. West (Garden City Softball from Missoula, Montana), U.S. Central (Escanaba Little League from Escanaba, Michigan) and U.S. Southeast.
Asia-Pacific (Guam Little League), U.S. East, Latin America (Maunabo, Puerto Rico), U.S. Southwest and the host team (Millsboro-Georgetown, Delaware) make up Pool A.
The top two teams in each pool make the medal round, with the gold-medal game slated for Aug. 8 at 2 p.m. local time.
