鈥淚 can鈥檛 help but wonder: What is today? Is it a recognition of a missed year? Or a celebration of one year out? Either way, it鈥檚 part of your story,鈥 McBean wrote to the Tokyo hopefuls.

鈥淓verything that has (or hasn鈥檛) happened in the last six months, and what will happen in the coming year, is part of your story. So here you are. You had a goal and a plan. You were sent home. Your plan was put on hold. More accurately, your plan was thrown in the garbage 鈥 your goal was not. Your story continues.

鈥淵our 2020 Olympic story is being written by you. It includes all the work and competition that led up to the global COVID-19 shutdown. It includes everything that you鈥檝e been doing since February and it will include everything that will come in the next year. McBean pointed to what Canadian Tokyo Olympic hopefuls have been doing in the time since the Summer Games were postponed, including 鈥淧am Buisa, supported by [fellow Olympic-team rugby-players] Josiah Morra and Charity Williams, organizing a peace rally for Black Lives in Victoria.鈥

鈥淚 couldn鈥檛 be prouder of the story that you鈥檙e telling so far,鈥 McBean wrote.

Pat Kay of Duncan, a player on the Canadian men鈥檚 sevens rugby team, which has qualified for Tokyo, said McBean鈥檚 was among several inspirational messages he received Thursday denoting the significance of the day.

鈥淚 have the same mindset going into next year that I had coming into this year,鈥 said the Cowichan Secondary graduate.

鈥淚 am staying positive and motivated. It鈥檚 hard to tell what will happen because this situation is always changing. But a year is a long time. I am preparing to compete next summer.鈥

That is what McBean would like to hear.

鈥淎s it always has been with sport, we can鈥檛 predict the end. Win or lose: that鈥檚 always been the game of it,鈥 she wrote to the Tokyo hopefuls.
