NEW YORK (AP) 鈥 No ex-president had a more prolific and diverse publishing career than .

His more than two dozen books included nonfiction, poetry, fiction, religious meditations and a children鈥檚 story. His memoir 鈥淎n Hour Before Daylight鈥 was a Pulitzer Prize finalist in 2002, while his 2006 best-seller 鈥淧alestine: Peace Not Apartheid鈥 stirred a fierce debate by likening Israel鈥檚 policies in the West Bank to the brutal South African system of racial segregation.

And just before his 100th birthday, the honored him with a for how he wielded "the power of the written word to foster peace, social justice, and global understanding.鈥

In one recent work, 鈥淎 Full Life,鈥 Carter observed that he 鈥渆njoyed writing鈥 and that his books 鈥減rovided a much-needed source of income.鈥 But some projects were easier than others.

鈥淓verything to Gain,鈥 a 1987 collaboration with his wife, Rosalynn, turned into the 鈥渨orst threat we ever experienced in our marriage,鈥 an intractable standoff for the facilitator of the Camp David accords and winner of the Nobel Peace Prize.

According to Carter, Rosalynn was a meticulous author who considered 鈥渢he resulting sentences as though they have come down from Mount Sinai, carved into stone.鈥 Their memories differed on various events and they fell into 鈥渃onstant arguments.鈥 They were ready to abandon the book and return the advance, until their editor persuaded them to simply divide any disputed passages between them.

鈥淚n the book, each of these paragraphs is identified by a 鈥楯鈥 or an 鈥楻,鈥 and our marriage survived,鈥 he wrote.
