On the Street: New executive director for housing society

Virginia Holden has been appointed executive director of the Greater Victoria Housing Society.

Virginia Holden has been appointed executive director of the Greater Victoria Housing Society.

Holden spent the past 15 years working for the provincial government in various leadership positions dedicated to affordable housing development and policy, community engagement and land-use planning. She recently established her own consulting practice to provide strategy and community engagement services to non-profit housing organizations.

Greater Victoria Housing Society is marking its 65th year of operations. It was founded by a small group of people who had a vision of providing affordable housing for seniors. Starting with just 26 homes, GVHS now provides 930 homes.

Beacon Community Services names Gueulette CEO

Tricia Gueulette has been named chief executive of Beacon 颅Community Services effective June 10. She will succeed Bob Boulter, who announced his intention to step down from the position.

鈥淭ricia has strong roots in the community, a good business sense and a passion for building and supporting inclusive and resilient communities,鈥 said Carla Robinson, chair of 颅Beacon鈥檚 board of directors.

Boulter will remain in the CEO role until Gueulette assumes office.

Gueulette鈥檚 professional 颅background includes about 20 years of executive and senior leadership positions in community, employment, and vocational rehabilitation services across sa国际传媒. Her most recent role was leading the Canadian Veterans Vocational Rehabilitation Services program on behalf of March of Dimes sa国际传媒 and WCG Services, headquartered in Victoria.

Beacon Community Services is a community-based charity dedicated to helping people and improving lives in the Greater Victoria and Gulf Islands areas. It has 600 volunteers and 230 staff.

Museum publisher named to provincial book board

Eve Rickert of the Royal 颅British Columbia Museum has been nominated to the board of 颅directors of the Association of Book Publishers of sa国际传媒

Rickert joined the museum鈥檚 publications team in 2018. Under her guidance, the publishing program has taken a collaborative approach to developing books, expanded distribution, increased accessibility and strengthened the museum鈥檚 commitment to publishing books by Indigenous writers.

She has revitalized the 颅museum鈥檚 popular natural 颅history handbook series. The museum published Sharks, Skates, Rays and Chimeras of British Columbia in 2020, and will publish Mushrooms of 颅British Columbia later this year and Bats of 颅British Columbia in 2022.

Two recent Royal sa国际传媒 Museum publications have won awards.

Spirits of the Coast: Orcas in Science, Art and History, a literary and visual companion piece to the Royal sa国际传媒 Museum鈥檚 feature exhibition, Orcas: Our Shared Future, was recognized by the Association of Book Publishers of sa国际传媒 as one of the top 20 bestsellers published in 2020. Spirits of the Coast, edited by museum curators Martha Black, Lorne Hammond and Gavin Hanke, with guest editor Nikki Sanchez, was a 2020 Nautilus Book Award silver winner and won a special honour as best of small press.
