Celebrity unions made in heaven - or not

History is filled with collaborators who bonded during the moviemaking process, from Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins (who met during Bull Durham) to Tim Burton and Helena BonhamCarter (who were married following the making of Planet of the Apes).

History is filled with collaborators who bonded during the moviemaking process, from Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins (who met during Bull Durham) to Tim Burton and Helena BonhamCarter (who were married following the making of Planet of the Apes).

There are also plenty of instances where actors intermingled during a movie shoot to the shock and awe of audiences - and the separation of husbands and wives.

The latest illicit affair to occur during filmmaking was that of Kristen Stewart and Rupert Sanders. The dalliance between the Snow White and the Huntsman star (who was living with Robert Pattinson at the time) and her married-with-children director caused headline-making headaches for everyone involved.

The tabloid roars will likely resurface today as Snow White and the Huntsman arrives on Bluray and DVD.

Plenty of tsk tsking came before the Sanders-Stewart sandwich. Here's a rundown of the on-set dalliances from movies past.

1 Brad Pitt/Angelina Jolie. The Hollywood power couple came into being during the filming of 2005's Mr. and Mrs. Smith, a wellregarded actioner that soared via their on-screen chemistry. But Pitt was married to Jennifer Aniston at the time. The couple soon divorced, and Jolie and Pitt carried on as real-life (though unofficial) Mr. and Mrs.

Pitt emerged unscathed; Jolie, on the other hand, was branded a homewrecker - until she started her United Nations campaigns.

2 Elizabeth Taylor/Richard Burton. Sparks flew in 1963 during the filming of Cleopatra, a mega-budget production heavy with onset romance. Their magnetism came at the expense of their significant others: Taylor was married to Eddie Fisher at the time, while Burton was not yet divorced from Sybil Williams. The drama surrounding their tryst (which provoked comment from the Vatican) is considered to have kickstarted the tabloid industry.

3 Humphrey Bogart/Lauren Bacall. In terms of pairings that are simply meant to be, Bogie and Bacall are second only to peanut butter and jam. Though he was 25 years her senior during the filming of 1944's To Have and Have Not - not to mention married to someone else - the screen icon seduced his costar in quick fashion, igniting one of the most successful on-screen/off-screen pairings in Hollywood history. From their marriage in 1945 to his death in 1957, Bogie and Bacall gave chemistry a new name.

4 Ali MacGraw/Steve McQueen. MacGraw's second marriage to producer Robert Evans (whose then-studio, Paramount, produced MacGraw in Love Story) was over soon after she started filming alongside McQueen in The Getaway. The couple (who had a young child at the time) divorced in 1972, paving the way for the MacGrawMcQueen union, which lasted a scant five years.

5 Russell Crowe/Meg Ryan. A lot was riding on Proof of Life for Russell Crowe, whose two previous films (Gladiator and The Insider) crowned him an Oscar-winning superstar. But word of his affair with married costar Meg Ryan hampered both the production and reception of the film, which bombed. Ryan divorced Dennis Quaid after a rocky nine-year marriage. A future with Crowe wasn't in the cards, either. He married Danielle Spencer in 2003.

6 Kate Beckinsale/Len Wiseman. Not every domestic dissolution is nasty. By all accounts, Beckinsale's split from longtime partner (and Underworld costar) Michael Sheen during the filming of said film was brought about by her feelings for Underworld director Len Wiseman. Beckinsale and Wiseman are now married and have the full support of Sheen, with whom Beckinsale has a daughter.

7 Daniel Craig/Rachel Weisz. The couple met and became close while filming the universally panned thriller Dream House. That relationship expedited Weisz's split from director Darren Aronofsky, to whom she had been engaged (she also has a son with the Oscar nominee). The current James Bond then broke off his four-year engagement to Satsuki Mitchell, paving the way for the secret Weisz-Craig marriage last summer.

8 Paul Hogan/Linda Kozlowski. Paul Hogan's divorce from his wife of 30 years ranks as one of the biggest celebrity scandals in Australia's history. Hogan met and reportedly became involved with Kozlowski in 1986 while filming the blockbuster Crocodile Dundee. After his very public and drawn-out divorce from Noelene Edwards (with whom he has five children), Hogan eventually married his American costar.

9 Claire Danes/Billy Crudup. Messy is the only way to describe this union, which blossomed when Danes (who was dating musician Ben Lee) and Crudup (who was expecting a child with girlfriend Mary-Louise Parker) were filming 2004's Stage Beauty. Reports surfaced in 2006 that Danes was involved with her Evening co-star Hugh Dancy, resulting in a split with Crudup. Danes and Dancy have since married and are expecting their first child.

10 Dev Patel/Freida Pinto. Slumdog Millionaire brought Patel and Pinto together. Prior to filming the Oscar winner for best picture, Pinto was engaged to her former publicist Rohan Antao, who has since claimed that his fianc脙漏e broke off their 16-month relationship via phone. Pinto and Patel, on the other hand, remain a happily co-habitating couple.
